Mesa Elementary School
THE ART CURRICULUM:
This year (2023-2024) in art we have an overarching theme of Color Theory. Throughout this theme we will be exploring how color in art and design is used in a variety of ways. We will explore the color wheel, color mixing, color schemes, psychology of color, light vs. pigment, and more. Our art show will be centered around this theme of color with a display of at least one project per student enrolled at Mesa by March 1st 2024.
Another major influence in the arts is History and Culture. Each year, different grade levels study different cultures throughout different areas and time periods. We also will study a variety of different artists from different locations and time periods as well. Here are the cultures each grade level will be focusing on this year in art:
Kindergarten: Oaxacan
1st Grade: Paleolithic
2nd Grade: Indian & African
3rd Grade: Nahuatl & Japanese
4th Grade: Italian
5th Grade: Aztec or Aboriginal
Art skills are a huge part of the art room. Every project we will be focusing on building these skills. The skills students gain from the arts prepare them for the 21st century. Some of the skills we build upon in the art room are: observation, creativity, communication, following directions, planning, reflection, and collaboration.
I also keep the curriculum lively finding inspiration from other content areas and by incorporating art careers. Many of the projects are inspired from picture books, especially with the younger students, as well as science and history.
Finally I try to challenge each grade level through the experience a variety of materials and genres. Some genre choices include: portraits, architecture, cartoons, realism, abstraction, non-objective, landscapes, and figure drawing.
