Essential Questions: What do artists make art about? What can we learn from other artists?
Essential Understanding: Artists learn from other artists
Art Skills: Observation
Vocabulary: Watercolor Wash Wax Resistant
Learning Targets & Success Criteria:
I can describe the steps used in creating works of art (3.1.b.)
I can share materials with intention and care (3.1.c.)
I can Discuss how visual art and design are used to remember and document personal feelings (4.1.c)
Ideation: As a class, Mrs. Tague reads Van Gogh and the Sunflowers by Laurence Anholt. The students hen follow along with a guided drawing of a sunflower. They use references of Van Gogh’s sunflower painting and some fake sunflowers. Through observation we discuss how petals overlap. We also look at Van Gogh’s starry night for ideas to decorate the background.
Reflection & Assessment: Students discuss in their group what is one thing they learned about Vincent Van Gogh and the painting of their sunflower. Students will also share how they created their sunflower. They will do this by writing out a letter describing what steps they took to complete it. They can share this with a friend, a teacher, a family member, or in a flipgrid video. Students will be assessed on their use of materials, effectiveness of resistant, and the neatness of their painting.
Materials: For this project, we use crayons and watercolor paints and explore how wax causes physical changes to works of art.
