Ideation: For this project, we learned about Pablo Picasso's style of cubism. After looking at some of his artwork, we played a game called "roll a Picasso." With this game, students were given a face shape, two different eyes, and a nose by chance (1 in 6 chance) based off popular Picasso shapes. They planned out their artwork by drawing their face as they got their random forms. Afterwards, they planned out their colors for their mask.

Materials & Techniques: As artists, we try our best to be sustainable with our materials, and sometimes that means using things we don't conventionally thing of as art. In this project we use cardboard (precut in their face forms) as the base for our mask. One half of the cardboard is peeled up to reveal the bumpy texture underneath. We then use black paint to cover our artwork. Then we use oil pastels to add our complementary colors to our artwork. Our eyes, nose and mouth, are drawn onto scrap paper, then cut out and glued down to our masks as well. Yarn is available to add hair to their mask if the artist chooses as well.
Reflection: At the end of this project, the students share with their classmates what emotion their mask is showing. They also come up with a story to tell using their mask.
